Lesson Structure for 1 - 7 Day Surfing Course

1 - 2 hours each stage (lesson)

Lesson 1: ABC Lesson - waist deep white water

Part A: On Beach - Safety talk and EAP/lifeguards/flags/instructor signals/lesson format

Part B: On Beach - Explain and demonstrate - Parts of board/getting out/catching waves/toboggan take off/prone rides/board trim/wipe out action/safety review/board control/Warm up

In Water - Practice

Part C: On Beach - Explain and demonstrate- Paddling take off/prone to standing techniques/standing ride/safety and board control

In Water - Practice

Lesson 2: Waist Deep - White water only

On Beach - Safety talk/Warm up and stretch:

10 minutes/Prone to standing refinement/Stand up.

Refining/Board control and length of ride/Effects of foot position - front to back foot weighting and un-weighting for acceleration and stalling techniques/Improve paddling

In Water - practice

Lesson 3: Waist to Chest depth - White water practice

All of lesson 2 for reinforcement and turning the board and general board control.

Forehand and backhand turning principles/style development for fluidity of ride, body flexibility, body movements and general surf awareness.

Lesson 4: Waist to chest depth - White water and reforms

All of lesson 3 plus practice and refinement of all skills acquired so far. Directional changes with control. "S" turns on wave. Wave selection and timing/Use of improver type board i.e. Soft top, slick bottom.

Lesson 5: White water/deeper water/Out the Back: Green Waves [if suitable conditions]

All of lesson 3, 4 and general refinement of all surf skills and surf awareness so far. Paddle out to waves/ sit on board and turn in both directions/ line up for waves; hold position in line up/ timing the sets and wave selection/riding "Green" unbroken waves (forehand and backhand)

Lesson 6: White Water / Waist to Chest depth / Reforms

Introduction of 'Advanced' surfboard. Back to control of board, paddling, trim, length of ride and turning principles. Adjustment for student onto new equipment.

Lesson 7: Reforms / Out the Back / Green Waves [if suitable conditions]

As lesson 5 but Advanced on 'Custom' board

Surfing Knowledge and Understanding Topics: (to be conducted on a daily basis)

Surfing safety (Personal and Beach) awareness.

Weather/ surf and wave prediction (weather charts and "synoptic" readings)

Board design and personal board selection/ Wetsuit construction and multi-season uses.

Surfing terminology.
